Welcome to the co2balance Kenya Blog,
These are exciting times for co2balance in Kenya and Africa - We want you to be a part of our rapid growth and expansion and to share in the positive impacts our projects are having on local communities.
It is for this reason that we have created a co2balance Kenya blog. Here you will find the latest News, Case Studies and Regular Updates to keep you aware, informed and up to date on what we are doing.
The past 2 months have been really exciting. Kenya welcomed Steve Hewson of Toshiba to our offices on Diani Beach. We took Steve to visit our stoves in the villages, giving him the opportunity to speak with the local women and find out for himself about the positive impacts of our projects.
Steve visited our Gold Standard Micro Scale project in Likoni our Gold Standard Small Scale projects in Kasigau and Maungu. He was met by Siddiqi, a local youth who took him around to visit the households. Steve was taken into homes where women were still using the traditional three stone stove. He spoke to them about the difficulties they face when cooking using this traditional method. They told him about how far they have to walk to collect firewood and how much indoor smoke pollution is created as a result of the traditional cooking method.
Steve was then taken to visit households with the new co2balance Energy Efficient Cookstove. He interviewed these women and listened as they explained how the project has benefited them. They confirmed that they now use half the amount of firewood they would otherwise be using with the traditional stove, and that they are spending less time alone in the forest collecting wood.
Steve was offered chiapattis and beans - a local staple - cooked on the improved stove. We are thrilled to inform you that Steve is not afraid to get his hands dirty. He tucked into the meal (no knife and fork, oblivious to the chickens and dogs running around him) and finished every last piece of food on his plate.
Although it was sad to see Steve leave Kenya, we were pleased that he was able to experience first hand how our client's offset funds are able to help towards cultivating change within the local communities.
Keep watching this space - as we bring you more updates and info from Kenya
