Sea buries a Ghanan village

The rising Atlantic Ocean is swallowing a village on the southern coast of Ghana, and more villages are being threatened, with climate change being blamed.

The rise in tides has resulted in villagers in Totope being forced to leave their old homes and build new ones every few years.  The end of the village is close, as it is located between the ocean and the Songho Lagoon, meaning that in a few years it will cease to exist.

The situation is so bad in Totope that fisherman have to be careful that their nets do not snag on the building submerged under the water.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007 said that since 1993 the world’s oceans are rising by 3mm a year, posing a threat to the future of many coastal areas, something that is fast becoming a reality in Totope.  For more information on the situation in Totope, please click here.
