Increase in carbon emissions threatens coral reefs

The huge increase in man made carbon emissions is posing a significant risk to coral reefs, threatening the entire ecosystems.

The world’s oceans are absorbing more carbon, making them more acidic; this, coupled with the oceans becoming warmer, is weakening the coral reefs.

A recent summit by marine scientists at the International Coral Reef Symposium in Florida revealed that unless action to reduce carbon levels are taken soon, the worlds coral reefs could be gone by the end of the century.

The reefs in Hawai’i are thought to be the most at risk, as they are located at a higher latitude and are in cooler waters, and a Honolulu Declaration on Ocean Acidification and Reef Management has been set up to try and combat the problem,
