Cows are doing it – are you?

UK farmers are taking steps to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced by their cows by introducing a special diet.
Animal production accounts for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and the work of Dairy UK has shown a decrease in the amount of methane produced by cows on their new diet, with a drop of 20% in the amount of gas for every litre of milk produced.
If this were to be replicated across the UK it would equivalent to removing 1.6 million tons of carbon dioxide every year.
The report, called “
Green and White” also claimed that dairy companies have managed to cut their energy use by 16% since the mid-1990s. The industry have also made a commitment to recycle half of the plastic milk bottles used by 2020 and cut water use by 30%.
In Africa, co2balance are building biogas plants that take the animal waste and converting the methane into energy to power cooking stoves.
