World Tourism Day took place at the weekend (27th September), and it mark the occasion, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) called for the industry to play a greater part in tackling climate change and alleviating poverty.

UNWTO said that the tourism industry needs to take bigger strides in reducing the impact of their carbon footprint, and adopt sustainable practices.

The theme of this year’s World Tourism Day was based around responding to the threats and challenges posed by climate change, and encouraged the tourism industry to implement climate friendly policies, as well as adopting the inevitable changes that climate change will bring.

UNWTO encourages tourism stakeholders to:
o    adapt tourism policies, commerce and destinations;
o    mitigate greenhouse gas;
o    apply existing and new technologies particularly for energy efficiency; and
o    encourage  financial resources particularly for developing states.
